The story of reMINDers:
No matter how old we are or how wise we can be in our calmest moments, when anxiety or stress come calling- all the wisdom can fly out of our heads.
I’ve been reading about the power of positive self talk, reframing our internal narrative from,
“I don’t want to feel so stressed” (brain hears ‘feel so stressed’)
To
“I am calm” (brain hears ‘calm’)
It’s all about ensuring that neural pathways aren’t triggering flight, fight or freeze responses.
No thank you, overactive adrenal gland, we won’t be needing to run away from a tiger today, you can chill.
When adrenaline floods the body, we can find ourselves becoming fidgety. It helps if we can get up and move, but that isn’t always possible or desirable. We’ve all seen the fidget toys available everywhere, but I wanted to create something more environmentally sustainable that combined the need to fiddle with the power of positive words.
Please have a look at the feedback I’ve received on the prototypes. This anonymised feedback has come from:
One family with 2 children (8 and 12) they have had some school related anxiety and a recent family bereavement;
One family with a 15 year old who chose the DIY option;
One pastoral support team who had both options and also road-tested the PDF download, available at https://ko-fi.com/s/db618f6a84
Options:
There are currently two reMINDer designs in production; one specifically aimed at reducing anxiety and one left blank for you to add phrases specific to you/ your recipient.
You can use pencil*, biro or permanent marker to write your own messages. Simply unscrew with a standard flat head screwdriver, write the phrases and screw the wheels back together.
*I’ve experimented with pencil and found that you can rub it off and rewrite. Don’t press too hard or you’ll leave score marks in the wood.
You can loosen and tighten the wheel to increase or decrease the ease of spinning to suit you. Use a flathead screwdriver if it has become very tight.
