Mother's Day for people who don't like Mother's Day

You could be forgiven for thinking I no longer write blog posts, it’s been so long. Have you missed me? Of course not. If this is the only way we have contact then we are NOT close enough to miss each other’s absences. Ha! Clever little side step to avoid taking responsibility for being rubbish at writing blogs.

Anyway, this blog is all about Mother’s Day. Like any significant, marked day, Mother’s Day is a mixed bag: for some it is wall-to-wall appreciation, lie-in, flowers, posh tea and hugs. For others it is a clang when the day goes unmarked by children or a partner. For many it’s a day like any other because they’re doing it on their own and there’s no-one to organise the kids into a finger painting session or cook a lovely breakfast in bed. For some it is a painful reminder of a much missed mum who is no longer around or the stab of longing for a pregnancy or child lost. It’s a tricky day to navigate and I wanted to try and consider the range of emotions people will be feeling on the run up. Look, I know I design cards, I’m not under any illusion that I’m a therapist. My scope for helpfulness is limited BUT I’ve always appreciated a thoughtful, handwritten card when I‘ve been happy or sad and I’m sure that goes for many others. It shows you care and that you’ve thought about them which is just about as lovely as it gets on a day-to-day level.

With all that in mind I have cards ranging from:

Traditional Thank yous,

For your mum when you are a parent yourself,

‘From’ a baby to its mum,

For a friend who needs reminding that they’re doing a great job- Frozen or Charlie and Lola,

Mocking the whole tradition (while still participating),

Bear Hug for any reason,

A sympathy card when you know Mother’s Day is going to be painful,

Increase Your Peace card acknowledging that the recipient needs some time for themself

Awesome Women Feminist card for the coooool mamas

All the cards are printed on recycled or fsc mix card and are packaged without cellophane. It’s free UK p+p too! If you’re unaware of the Just a Card and Naked Card campaigns, please go and give them a look. They’re both brilliant.

If you’re after more than just a card, you can find a selection of gift ideas under £15 right here.

Oh crap, forgot to say Mother’s Day is on the 22nd of March. I am so good at this marketing malarky.
